CARDINAL Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history, will be the Catholic Church’s 267th leader.
He will serve the world’s s 1.4 billion Catholics.
In his first remarks as pope from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he called for peace and paid tribute to the late Pope Francis.
Pope Francis popularly known as “The People’s Pope” died on April 21, 2025.
The 69-year-old new pope from Chicago, is a leader with global experience. He spent much of his career as a missionary in South America and served as bishop in Peru.
Pope Leo XIV is expected to build on Pope Francis’ reforms.
On Thursday, the temporary chimney atop the Sistine Chapel released a plume of white smoke, signaling that the 133 cardinals had reached a two-thirds majority vote to elect a new pope.
Church bells rang and thousands of people at the St. Peter’s Square cheered as the white smoke billowed out of the chimney.
The new pope was chosen after two days of conclave voting.
