Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Thursday announced that the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will be moved from December 1, 2025 to November 2026, once President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signs the bill postponing the polls.
The House of Representatives and the Senate approved the bill that will move the holding of the BSKE to the first Monday of November 2026 and every four years thereafter.
The bill will also standardize term limits, allowing barangay chairmen and councilors to serve two consecutive four-year terms, while SK officials would be limited to a single four-year term.
Remulla told reporters in Legazpi City that the President is expected to sign the measure soon.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the bill seeking to postpone the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) is set to be signed on August 12.
“The Palace informed us that there will be a formal signing of the law re BSKE fixing of term and postponement on Aug. 12 at 2 p.m.,” Comelec chairperson George Garcia said.
Despite the impending passage of the bill into law, the Comelec chair said they will continue with their preparations for the BSKE, set on December 1.
“Even if the law is signed, we will continue our preparations because someone may question it before the Supreme Court (SC). What will happen if it issues a temporary restraining order and the Comelec is not prepared?” he said.
Garcia said they will prepare until it becomes clear that the SC won’t act on a petition questioning the postponement of the BSKE.
