A FIRE allegedly started by a jealous husband on Wednesday left two people dead and around 600 families homeless in Intramuros, Manila
Authorities said the victims were a senior citizen who suffered from a heart attack and a person with disability.
The fire, which hit a densely populated Maisan area at the corner of Cabildo and Anda Streets in Intramuros, was first reported at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday and was raised to 4th alarm.
Firefighters responded and contained the blaze, which was declared fire out at around 11:30 p.m..
The fire, which lasted for more than six hours, destroyed at least 300 houses.
An investigation showed the blaze was started by an ex-convict identified only as alias “Burnok.”
Police reports indicate that the suspect, who was recently released from detention, got jealous after discovering his with another man.
The suspect allegedly got gasoline from his father’s truck, doused his fourth-floor home, and set it ablaze.
The fire quickly spread to adjacent houses made of light materials.
Enraged neighbors reportedly attacked the suspect before police intervened and took him into custody.
Meanwhile, the affected families sought shelter at the Delpan Sports Complex, while San Agustin Church set up tents to provide hot meals and emergency aid.
The city government assured that affected residents would receive immediate assistance.
