A PUBLIC school teacher in Muntinlupa died during a classroom observation.
The Department of Education (DepEd) is mourning the death of teacher Agnes Buenaflor, 58.
Buenaflor collapsed while teaching a class under observation on Jan. 7 at Pedro E. Diaz High School in Muntinlupa City.
She was rushed to a hospital, where she later died.
The DepEd expressed its deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and learners of the late teacher.
“We mourn the loss of a dedicated educator and stand in solidarity with the school community during this difficult time,” it said.
Meanwhile, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has called on the DepEd to immediately declare a nationwide suspension of classroom observations and to conduct a broad consultations with teachers following the reported death of the Muntinlupa public school teacher.
In a letter addressed to DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara, the group said the incident highlights the urgent need to review classroom observation policies that form part of the current teacher performance rating.
According to TDC, classroom observations should remain a supportive and formative process intended to improve teaching practice and professional growth and should never be used as a punitive or judgmental mechanism.
