A CACHE of live hand grenades was discovered buried in a public cemetery in Lucban, Quezon.
A report from the Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry Division (2nd ID) said that Private First Class Bismarck Floyd Mandaing, a member of the 404th Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion, was visiting a family grave at the cemetery in Bgy. Palola on January 18 when he received an information that bombs were buried near a large fallen tree in the cemetery.
The Army reservist and his companions immediately checked the area and found a total of 120 hand grenades buried underground near the fallen tree.
The ordnance was immediately secured and the surrounding area was cleared to ensure the safety of cemetery visitors, the Army said in a statement.
Authorities were notified, and coordination was made with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) battalion, whose personnel later arrived to assess and take custody of the recovered grenades.
An investigation is ongoing.
