SENATE <\/strong>President Francis \u201cChiz\u201d Escudero on Thursday bared the proposed timetable for the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Escudero said the Senate has proposed to begin the impeachment trial on July 30, following a structured pre-trial process to ensure a fair and orderly proceeding.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Senate leader said official preparations would start on June 2, when the Senate resumes session wherein prosecutors will present the Articles of Impeachment and senators will approve revised trial rules.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n He said by June 3, the Impeachment Court will convene and senator judges will take their oaths of office.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n By June 4, the Senate is expected to issue a summon to Duterte.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Escudero said that between June 14 and 24, the prosecution and defense will exchange legal pleadings, leading to pre-trial proceedings from June 24 to July 25.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n With the 20th Congress set to open on July 28, or after the May 12 midterm polls, the newly-elected senators will take their oath on July 29, officially seating them as Impeachment Court judges.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The trial will begin the next day, July 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Escudero assured the public that the Senate will uphold fairness throughout the proceedings.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n “The integrity of this impeachment trial is paramount. We are duty-bound to conduct the process with professionalism and transparency,” the Senate leader said.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Earlier, Escudero had ordered offices in the Upper Chamber to prepare for the impending impeachment trial.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>He made the directive via Special Order No. 2025-015, seeking the organization of administrative support to the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Despite this, he maintained that the proceedings would not be rushed, sticking to his earlier pronouncements that the proper impeachment trial against the vice president would start after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.\u2019s fourth State of the Nation Address in July.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n On February 5, the House of Representatives impeached VP Sara on the basis of the seven articles of impeachment, which was endorsed by over 200 lawmakers from the Lower House.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Among the basis of the impeachment complaints were the vice president\u2019s alleged involvement in a conspiracy to assassinate President Ferdinand \u201cBongbong\u201d Marcos Jr., his wife, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez; the malversation of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds from the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education (DepEd) during her tenure as secretary from 2022 to 2024; and bribery and corruption within the DepEd.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Thursday bared the proposed timetable for the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte.
