CARDINAL <\/strong>Robert Francis Prevost of the United States <\/strong>has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Leo XIV.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history, will be the Catholic Church\u2019s 267th<\/sup> leader.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n He will serve the world\u2019s s 1.4 billion Catholics.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In his first remarks as pope from the balcony of St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, he called for peace and paid tribute to the late Pope Francis.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Pope Francis popularly known as \u201cThe People\u2019s Pope\u201d died on April 21, 2025.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The 69-year-old new pope from Chicago, is a leader with global experience.
