Marcos Jr. announced on Tuesday a reduction of the U.S. tariff rate on Philippine goods from 20 percent to 19 percent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe managed to bring down the 20 percent tariff rate for the Philippines to 19. Now, one percent might seem like a very small concession. However when you put it in real terms, it is a significant achievement,\u201d President Marcos said in an interview with the Philippine media delegation before heading back to Manila.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The revised tariff rates placed the Philippines among the most competitively positioned Southeast Asian economies trading with the United States. Currently, the Philippines holds the second-lowest tariff rate in the region at 19 percent, with Singapore, which has a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the U.S., maintaining the lowest at 10 percent. U.S. tariffs for other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries range between 19 percent to 49 percent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez said trade discussions will continue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe lowering of tariff to 19 percent is a good deal for the moment but there is still more that we can do and that there will still be more discussions ahead,\u201d Romualdez said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a joint press conference before their bilateral meeting at the White House, Trump described President Marcos as a \u201cvery tough negotiator\u201d in advancing Philippine interests.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe\u2019ll probably agree to something. But he is a strong negotiator. He loves your country,\u201d said Trump.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Under the trade deal, President Marcos confirmed that the Philippines will remove tariffs on American automobile imports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBecause we have a tariff on American automobiles, we will open that market and no longer charge tariffs on that,\u201d said President Marcos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other hand, the President noted that the Philippines will increase imports from the United States for soy products, wheat, and pharmaceuticals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMas maging mas mura \u2018yung gamot natin,\u201d the President stressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of detail that needs to be worked out on the different products and the different exports and imports,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The US is a top trading partner of the country with bilateral trade of over $20 billion in 2024.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"id\":15381,\"sizeSlug\":\"full\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"999\" height=\"598\" src=\"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/qx5eiysn.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/qx5eiysn.png 999w, https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/qx5eiysn-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/qx5eiysn-768x460.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\"><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>NOT THE MOST FAIR DEAL \u2013 LACSON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senator Panfilo \u201cPing\u201d Lacson said 19% vs 0% tariffs is definitely not the most fair deal between decades-old friends or allies like the United States and the Philippines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf I may add, it is the worst insult that a host can throw at his guest. It is time for us to look for other trade partners,\u201d said Lacson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The President\u2019s sister Senator Imee Marcos, on the other hand, said a mere 1% reduction in tariff rates for Philippine goods while having zero tariffs for U.S. goods certainly does not look like a win for the Philippines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOLLOWING negotiations with United States President Donald Trump, President Ferdinand R.
