{"id":17464,"date":"2025-11-14T01:49:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T17:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/?p=17464"},"modified":"2025-11-14T01:49:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T17:49:43","slug":"juan-ponce-enrile-dies-at-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/index.php\/2025\/11\/14\/juan-ponce-enrile-dies-at-101\/","title":{"rendered":"JUAN PONCE ENRILE PASSES AWAY AT 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FORMER Senate President and Chief <\/strong><strong>Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile on Thursday afternoon has passed away at the age of 101, his daughter Katrina said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Katrina said his father \u201cpeacefully returned to his Creator\u201d at 4:21 p.m. Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u201cIt was his heartfelt wish to take his final rest at home, with his family by his side. We were blessed to honor that wish and to be with him in those sacred final moments,\u201d she said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;He dedicated much of his life to the service of the Filipino people. At this time, we humbly ask for the public\u2019s understanding as our family takes a brief moment to grieve privately and honor his memory together in quiet and in peace,&#8221; Katrina\u2019s post stated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The family will make further announcements on arrangements for public viewing and funeral rites in the coming days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Last Tuesday, Senator Jinggoy Estrada said Enrile is in the intensive care unit (ICU) of an undisclosed hospital for pneumonia and had\u00a0 slim chances of surviving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrile was born in Gonzaga, Cagayan on Feb. 14, 1924. He studied at the Ateneo de Manila University where he earned his associate of arts degree cum laude. He finished his law degree cum laude at the University of the Philippines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrile topped the Bar examinations with a score of 98.75 (adjusted). He later finished his education with a master of laws from Harvard University.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For seven decades Enrile has been a central figure in politics. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He joined the administration of the <\/strong><strong>late Ferdinand Marcos Sr.\u00a0in the 1960\u2019s and serve as Minister of National Defense.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He was elected to the Senate in 1987, where he became known for his mastery of legislation and legal debate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrile was elected senator for four terms (1987-1992, 1995-2001, 2004-2010, and 2010-2016), during which he served as Senate President from 2008 to 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>From 1992 to 1995, Enrile served as representative of Cagayan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2022, Enrile was appointed as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr..<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Throughout his long career, Enrile was regarded for his sharp intellect, extensive knowledge of law and governance, and resilience in public life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PBBM LEADS NATION\u2019S FAREWELL TO PH\u2019S POLITICAL ICON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the nation in paying tribute to Enrile.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u201cWe say goodbye to one of the most enduring and respected public servants our country has ever known,\u201d President Marcos said in a statement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cFor over 50 years, Juan Ponce Enrile dedicated his life to serving the Filipino people, helping guide the country through some of its most challenging and defining moments. Even in his final years, he remained brilliant, sharp, and firm in his belief that law and governance must always serve the Filipino people,\u201d the President added.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>President Marcos said Enrile\u2019s passing marked the close of a chapter in the country\u2019s history, but the mark he left behind in law, governance, and public service will never be forgotten.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMaraming salamat, Tito Johnny. Paalam at salamat sa isang buhay na buong puso mong inalay para sa bayan,\u201d President Marcos said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SENATORS MOURN PASSING OF \u2018MANONG JOHNNY\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Senate on Thursday mourned the passing of Enrile.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senate President Vicente \u201cTito\u201d Sotto III led tributes to the statesman he described as one of the institution\u2019s most enduring and influential pillars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sotto said Enrile devoted his entire life to public service, serving the nation with a formidable intellect and deep compassion for the Senate community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada said no words could fully capture the nation\u2019s loss nor the depth of grief felt by those who worked closely with Enrile.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He described Enrile as more than a mentor \u2014 \u201ca father figure\u201d whose wisdom, guidance and steadfast support shaped much of his early years in the Senate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe nation has lost one of its greatest and most formidable minds. And I have lost a mentor and a friend,\u201d Estrada said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sen. JV Ejercito also remembered Enrile as a \u201clegend in Philippine politics\u201d and \u201cone of the most brilliant minds to ever walk the Senate halls.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senators suspended the 2026 budget deliberations until Monday following Enrile\u2019s passing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel \u201cMigz\u201d Zubiri made the motion to suspend the session past 6:20 p.m., citing historical tradition.
