PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday led the inauguration of the 60-million-liters-per-day (MLD) Aglipay Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Mandaluyong, a major facility aimed at improving water quality in Metro Manila\u2019s waterways and protecting public health.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, President Marcos said the new sewage treatment plant is a concrete step toward fulfilling the government\u2019s responsibility to ensure access to clean water for all Filipinos.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Aglipay STP will serve a 2,115-hectare catchment area across Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City, benefiting more than 650,000 residents.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond the machinery, fascinating as it is, what really matters is the result, and that is cleaner water returned to the environment and reduced exposure of our people to the hazards of untreated sewage,\u201d said the President.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is how a carefully planned and thoroughly executed infrastructure directly improves the lives of our people.\u201d<\/strong>
\nPresident Marcos said the project\u2019s impact will be felt daily in households, rivers, and communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The facility, managed by Manila Water, was built at a cost of P3.93 billion. It can treat up to 60 million liters of wastewater per day and is designed to expand to 120 million liters per day as the population in the area grows.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis means that more liters of safe water is available for public consumption and more rivers and seas are preserved for future generations,\u201d said the President, adding that wastewater treatment is essential to public health, environmental protection, and sustainable development.<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Marcos noted that by reducing the amount of untreated wastewater flowing into rivers, the plant would help improve local water quality and support the long-term rehabilitation of Manila Bay.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chief Executive added that the government\u2019s efforts do not stop with the Aglipay STP, with five more wastewater treatment plants currently under construction as part of the administration\u2019s push to strengthen water and sanitation infrastructure in Metro Manila and nearby areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under the Revised Concession Agreement and Republic Act Nos. 11600 and 11601, the government aims to connect 76 percent of households in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Rizal to sewerage systems by 2047, with the rest covered by proper sanitation services.<\/strong>
\nP<\/strong>resident Marcos recognized Manila Water and Megawide Consortium for their role in building and operating the facilities, saying their expertise is vital in meeting environmental standards and providing reliable service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President emphasized that infrastructure alone is not enough and called on government agencies, the private sector, and the public to practice responsible waste disposal and maintain clean surroundings.<\/strong><\/p>\n
