SENAT<\/strong>OR \u201cIdol\u201d Raffy Tulfo criticized the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its lack of concrete action amid the widespread sale of illegal, counterfeit, and unregistered health products online and in physical stores.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During\u00a0 a\u00a0 Senate Committee on Health and Demography hearing, Tulfo told FDA Director General Paolo Teston that the FDA\u2019s actions should be thorough and not limited to issuing health advisories.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDahil\u00a0sa\u00a0online\u00a0selling\u00a0platforms,\u00a0halos\u00a0lahat\u00a0ngayon\u00a0ay\u00a0one\u00a0click\u00a0away.\u00a0Pero\u00a0kasabay\u00a0ng\u00a0convenience,\u00a0one\u00a0click\u00a0away\u00a0na\u00a0rin\u00a0ang\u00a0panganib,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

One example cited by Sen. Raffy was a test- uy conducted by his Senate team on Shopee, wherein they were able to purchase prescription-only medicines like clobetasol propionate and co-amoxiclav without a prescription.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He also discussed the surge in sales of \u201cTirzepatide\u201d on TikTok and other platforms. According to him, only the brand M<\/strong>ounjaro is FDA-registered in the Philippines, yet unregistered versions are widespread online and not properly regulated by the FDA.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAng pag-bebenta ng mga ito ay hindi shortcut sa pam- apayat, kundi shortcut sa panganib para sa ating consumers,\u201d he stressed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the senator emphasized that the spread of unregistered, unsafe, and fake products continues not only online but also in physical stores particularly in Binondo and Quiapo. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The senator’s aff conducted test buys in several retail stores, where they were still able to purchase Hokkaido Slimming Pills containing amphetamine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0FDA\u00a0had\u00a0issued\u00a0an\u00a0advisory\u00a0against\u00a0these\u00a0products\u00a0back\u00a0in\u00a02013,\u00a0yet\u00a0their\u00a0sale\u00a0remains\u00a0rampant.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the issue of counterfeit medicines, Sen. Tulfo said his team purchased fake Biogesic, Decolgen Forte, and Neozep in physical stores. Even worse, these are sometimes more expensive than pharmacy medicines, but they are ineffective and dangerous, potentially causing severe allergic reactions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUrgency is a must \u2018pag kalusugan ang pinag-usapan,\u201d said Sen. Raffy. \u201cSa pagdinig na ito, malinaw kung sino ang main character. Ang tanong: bida ba sila sa consumer protection, o sila ang kontrabida sa kalusugan ng bayan? In public health, advisories are not enough. Action is the real measure of credibility.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
