FORMER House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. also known as \u201cJDV or Manong Joe\u201d has passed away on Tuesday, Feb 10, 2026<\/strong>.at the age of 89.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His family confirmed his passing on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“With heavy hearts, our family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and patriarch, former Speaker of the House Jose C. de Venecia Jr.,” his family said in a statement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

De Venecia Jr. is survived by his wife Pangasinan Rep. Gina De Venecia, and children Christopher, Joey, Leslie Norton, Kristina Casimira Perez, Vivian Garcia, and Alexandra Haner.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was born Dec. 31, 1936 in Dagupan City in Pangasinan, and studied at the De La Salle University-Manila, and Ateneo de Manila University.<\/strong><\/p>\n

De Venecia was elected representative of Pangasinan seven times.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The House of Representatives said that De Venecia was the only member of the House who served as Speaker for five terms, particularly during the 9th to 10th, and 12th to 14th Congresses.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

De Venecia was a principal author of the Dollar Remittance Program, the Bases Conversion and Development Act, the Build-Operate-Transfer Law, the Philippine Economic Zone Act, and the New Central Bank Act, among others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“He championed landmark legislation that transformed the Philippine economy, strengthened democratic institutions, and uplifted millions of Filipino families, including overseas workers,” the De Venecia family said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The family added that as a tireless peacemaker, Speaker de Venecia pursued dialogue at moments when peace efforts were difficult and often unpopular, contributing to historic agreements with RAM-AFP-YOU in 1995 and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in 1996.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2024, both the House of Representatives and the Senate honored De Venecia Jr. in separate resolutions recognizing his decades-long career in public service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“He helped elevate Asia\u2019s collective voice and placed the Philippines at the center of global conversations on peace and diplomacy,” the De Venecia family said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“As we mourn his passing, we give thanks for a life that helped shape the Philippine Republic \u2014 and for a legacy that endures in our laws, our institutions, and our continuing pursuit of peace,” they noted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives joined the nation in mourning the passing of de Venecia Jr..<\/strong><\/p>\n

House Speaker Faustino \u201cBojie\u201d Dy III said de Venecia Jr. \u00a0was a respected statesman whose vision helped shape modern Philippine democracy and whose leadership left an enduring imprint on the institution he once led.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHis life of public service was marked by intellect, courage, and an undeniable devotion to the Filipino people. Si Manong Joe ay hindi lamang naging Speaker ng Kapulungan; siya ay isang haligi ng institusyon at tagapagtanggol ng demokrasya sa mga panahong hinamon ang ating bansa ng matitinding pagsubok. Nananatiling buhay ang kanyang pamana sa mga repormang kanyang isinulong, sa diplomasyang kanyang isinabuhay, at sa mga lingkod-bayang kanyang hinubog at binigyang-inspirasyon,\u201d Dy said. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cItinuro niya sa atin na ang pagsisilbi sa taumbayan ay isang sagradong panata na humihingi ng pagpapakumbaba, kahandaan, at katapatan para sa kapakanan ng bayan.
