{"id":3310,"date":"2024-01-20T00:29:57","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T16:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/?p=3310"},"modified":"2024-01-20T00:29:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T16:29:58","slug":"gatchalian-backs-catch-up-fridays-cites-need-for-learning-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/index.php\/2024\/01\/20\/gatchalian-backs-catch-up-fridays-cites-need-for-learning-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"GATCHALIAN BACKS \u2018CATCH-UP FRIDAYS,\u2019 CITES NEED FOR LEARNING RECOVERY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>SENATOR Win Gatchalian has expressed support to the Department of Education&#8217;s (DepEd) policy to implement &#8216;Catch-Up Fridays&#8217;, which seek to improve learners&#8217; reading proficiency.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gatchalian underscored the necessity of implementing the program considering that a significant number of the country&#8217;s learners struggle with reading.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Results of the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) showed that 76% of the country&#8217;s 15-year-olds have not achieved the minimum proficiency in reading.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>For the 2022 round of PISA, the Philippine average (347) in reading is still below the average of countries under the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) countries (476).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The OECD also indicates that, at the minimum, the country&#8217;s 15-year-old learners can understand the literal meaning of sentences or short passages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>OECD is the body that conducts the PISA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Sinusuportahan natin ang pagpapatupad ng &#8216;Catch-Up Fridays&#8217; dahil ito ay mag-aambag sa pagpapalakas ng kakayahan ng ating mga mag-aaral na bumasa. Nakita natin sa datos na marami sa ating mga mag-aaral ang nangangailangan ng tulong pagdating sa pagbabasa, kaya naman mahalagang suportahan natin ang mga programang tutugon sa pangangailangan nila,&#8221; said Gatchalian, &nbsp;hairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The DepEd kicked off \u201cCatch-Up Fridays\u201d last January 12. The program is being implemented in all public elementary and high schools nationwide, as well as in community learning centers (CLCs) nationwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Under DepEd Memorandum No. 001 s. 2024, all Fridays of January shall be dedicated to the Drop Everything and Read activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the DepEd memo, \u201cCatch-Up Fridays\u201d is integral in the National Reading and Mathematics Programs, both of which are critical sub-programs of the National Learning Recovery Program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gatchalian has also been pushing for measures that will strengthen learners&#8217; reading skills. One of these is the ARAL Program Act (Senate Bill No. 1604), which seeks to institute a national learning recovery program to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>He also filed the National Reading Month Act (Senate Bill No. 475), which aims to institutionalize the celebration of the National Reading Month every November to promote a culture of reading.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SENATOR Win Gatchalian has expressed support to the Department of Education&rsquo;s (DepEd) policy to implement &lsquo;Catch-Up Fridays&rsquo;, which seek to improve learners&rsquo; reading proficiency.
