MORE than 200 elementary school pupils were abducted by armed men from a school in northwest Nigeria on Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The kidnapping was confirmed by local government officials in <\/strong> Kaduna State.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani said the victims were students of Kuriga school.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 At least one person was reportedly shot dead during the attack.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Sani Abdullahi, one of the teachers at the GSS Kuriga school in the Chikun district, said school staff members managed to escape with many students when local bandits attacked early on Thursday firing gunshots in the air.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Abdullahi told local officials that 187 pupils had been snatched from the main school, along with another 100 from the school’s primary classes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Amnesty International condemned the snatching of students in Kaduna.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Schools should be places of safety, and no child should have to choose between their education and their life,” the rights group said on X, formerly Twitter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday sent troops to rescue the abducted students.<\/strong><\/p>\n
