A massive fire engulfed the Ilagan diocese\u2019s original cathedral while it was undergoing initial renovations Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The fire damaged \u2018everything\u2019 inside the 17th-century church, even causing a large portion of its roof to collapse.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cThe fire ravaged everything,\u201d said Fr. Ric-Zeus Angobung, the parish priest.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Angobung said he was outside the parish when the fire broke out, but reports reaching him revealed the fire started at about 11:40 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Firefighters rushed to contain the fire, which was extinguished after about an hour.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n While authorities are probing the cause of the incident, the priest said the fire occurred while workers were installing steel trusses on the church\u2019s ceiling.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n He said that work was underway to install ceiling fans inside the church \u2014 their first major project since he assumed the parish in August 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cSo this happened while there\u2019s an ongoing reinforcement of the ceiling of the parish church,\u201d Angobung said.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The St. Ferdinand Parish Church in IIagan City became the diocese\u2019s first cathedral when Ilagan was established as a diocese in 1970.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n A new cathedral was built at its current location in Isabela province\u2019s Gamu town in early 2000.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Angobung appealed to parishioners for their continued prayers.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cNobody wants this (to happen), but we can surrender to God\u2019s mercy and rise from these ashes, and work together to rebuild it,\u201d he said.
