{"id":7046,"date":"2024-07-08T23:44:45","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T15:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/?p=7046"},"modified":"2024-07-08T23:44:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T15:44:46","slug":"ph-japan-sign-deal-to-boost-defense-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/index.php\/2024\/07\/08\/ph-japan-sign-deal-to-boost-defense-cooperation\/","title":{"rendered":"PH, JAPAN SIGN DEAL TO BOOST DEFENSE COOPERATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE Philippines and Japan signed on Monday the Philippines-Japan Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) allowing Filipino soldiers to undergo joint combat training with their counterparts in Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The joint combat training to be held in Japan aims to further enhance the two nations\u2019 defense cooperation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The RAA was signed by Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko during the latter\u2019s courtesy call with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who witnessed the signing ceremony.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kamikawa was accompanied by Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru during the joint courtesy call.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The defense agreement, which will take effect after ratification by the two countries\u2019 legislatures, is the first pact forged by Japan in Asia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"id\":7049,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"537\" src=\"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/icva2td4-1024x537.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7049\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/icva2td4-1024x537.png 1024w, https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/icva2td4-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/icva2td4-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/icva2td4.png 1078w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>President Marcos expressed elation over the pact signing as he recognized the efforts from both sides. Such efforts have now come into fruition, he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYour presence here increases our confidence and the importance that the Japanese government puts on these extremely important agreements that we have. And I\u2019m very glad that we have come to this day,\u201d Marcos told the Japanese officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSo, once again, welcome to the Philippines. I\u2019m happy that you were able to come and visit to witness or to be part of this very important event,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Philippines and Japan welcomed the commencement of the RAA negotiations during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida\u2019s visit to the Philippines last November.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>The RAA with Japan was a commitment made at the inaugural Philippines-Japan Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting or 2+2 in April 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was reiterated during President Marcos\u2019 official visit to Japan in February 2023.
