{"id":7724,"date":"2024-08-10T00:34:24","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T16:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/?p=7724"},"modified":"2024-08-10T00:34:24","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T16:34:24","slug":"angara-wants-pisa-like-exams-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journaldailynewsonline.com.ph\/index.php\/2024\/08\/10\/angara-wants-pisa-like-exams-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"ANGARA WANTS PISA-LIKE EXAMS FOR STUDENTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>EDUCATION Secretary Juan Edgardo \u201cSonny\u201d Angara on Friday stressed the need to develop examinations in schools that would match the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Angara said school assessments should encourage students to be analytical and critical thinkers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think we need to have more test exams that are PISA-like,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Angara noted the quality of education in the country should be improved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>He further discussed that examinations should be presented in a way that students can harness their skills and apply them to real-life situations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt really goes to the quality of our education because the PISA exam measures very specific type of skills,\u201d he pointed out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThey present you the situation and you must react to it and analyze it. So, hindi lang siya parang iyong normal exam na ano iyong nangyari itong date na ito o ano iyong cause nito. So they really give you a problem set. It\u2019s a very real-world type,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Angara expressed his plans to change the culture of assessment and measurement in the Philippine education sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI want to change the culture because we want to have a culture of assessment and measurement, meaning our decisions are not based on what we think or what we feel, but really based on evidence; we measure our outcomes,\u201d Angara stressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>He referred to these plans as having \u201cmore objective tools to measure our education outcomes\u201d and maximizing the use of technology to modernize the sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2022, PISA revealed that Filipino students are lagging behind in reading, math, and science.
