<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bureau of Immigration \u2013 Intelligence Division (BI-ID) chief Fortunato Manahan Jr. said the foreign workers were discovered on two separate mining sites on the island.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Eleven of the arrested individuals possess working visas but were found working for a different company, which is a violation of their visa conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n An individual held a retiree\u2019s visa while another was identified as an overstaying alien.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The 13 Chinese nationals were arrested last October 30 by operatives of the BI-ID, in coordination with the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado underscored the need to enforce immigration laws in the areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cIllegal employment undermines local laws and communities. We are committed to monitoring and addressing cases like these to protect our borders and environment,\u201d said Viado.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cThe recent operation in Homonhon Island highlights our close coordination with national agencies to ensure compliance with our regulations,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The arrested Chinese nationals are now in the custody of the PAOCC while the BI initiates a deportation case against them.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Earlier this year, residents of the island voiced concerns over the environmental impact of the mining operations in the area.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Homonhon Island holds historical significance as the site where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan first landed in the Philippines.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" AUTHORITIES arrested 13 Chinese nationals illegally working in mining sites on Homonhon Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
