IN line with the instruction of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. to run after erring public transportation drivers, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), under the guidance of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon, suspended the license of 10 drivers of taxi and Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) for overcharging and for contracting passengers.
LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary attorney Vigor D. Mendoza II said show cause orders (SCOs) were already issued to all the taxi and TNVS drivers who were all caught during the conduct of surprise operation at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on June 25.
“We already informed these drivers of the suspension of their licenses for 90 days through the SCOs that we issued them. In other words, wala silang trabaho during that period, at ito ay dahil sa pananamantala sa ating mga kababayang commuter,” said Mendoza.
“Our operations in all NAIA terminals will continue because we want our country’s main gateway to be a discipline zone,” he added.
Mendoza earlier ordered the regular deployment of LTO enforcer team at the three NAIA terminals following at least three cases of viral overcharging cases—one driver charged a passenger with P1,300 for a short trip from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 while another one charged a passenger with over P5,000 in a separate trip from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2.
Meanwhile, a motorcycle taxi rider is currently being investigated for charging a passenger P2,000 from NAIA to Cainta, Rizal.
Secretary Dizon, for his part, has repeatedly warned erring public utility vehicle drivers against serious consequences for overcharging passengers.
“Hindi tayo papayag sa mga ganitong klaseng pang-aabuso. Kung kayang gawin ito sa mga kababayan natin, what more sa mga dayuhan na turista. Makakasama ito sa imahe ng ating bansa,” Dizon said.
All the drivers apprehended are facing a case of being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle which has a maximum penalty of revocation of driver’s license.
