US President Joe Biden has dropped out from the presidential race in the November 2024 election.
The withdrawal came after weeks of mounting pressure from Democrats.
He said the move is for the best interest of his party and his country.
Earlier, Democrats publicly urged the 81-year-old Biden to drop the race after his shaky debate performance last month against Republican challenger Donald Trump, 78.
Biden, who had previously dismissed calls to abandon his re-election bid, said he will stay on for the final six months of his term.
He endorsed Kamala Harris, his vice president, to be the new Democratic nominee.
Harris said she intends to win and will do everything in her power to unite the nation to defeat Trump.
Former President Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton, who ran against Trump in 2016, also endorsed Harris, saying Democrats must “fight with everything we’ve got to elect her.”
Ex-President Barack Obama said Democrats will name an “outstanding nominee,” but does not endorse any candidate.
Americans are set to cast their vote for presidential election on November 5 this year.
