POLE vaulter EJ Obiena became the first Filipino athlete to earn a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after clearing the Olympic standard of 5.82 meters at the Bauhaus Galan in Stockholm, Sweden.
Obiena was followed by gymnast Carlos Yulo, who was named thehighest-ranked eligible athlete in floor exercise at the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held in Antwerp, Belgium.
Obiena hurdled the height on his second attempt just a day after the start of the Olympic qualification season and eventually captured the silver medal behind world champion Armand Duplantis.
Meanwhile, Yulo who led the Philippines in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, wound up third in the event after collecting 14.600 points behind top finisher Artem Dolgopyat of Israel (15.100) and second placer Fred Richard of USA (14.600).
Dolgopyat and Richard have already been qualified to the Paris Olympics, making Yulo the next best athlete to reach the Olympics.
