THE alleged leader of a gun-for-hire and robbery group on Saturday was killed in an encounter with the police in Bacoor City, Cavite.
Killed was Gelbirth Albios Puerto alias “Boss Bay,” the 30-year-old leader of the “Bayawak gang,” operating in the National Capital Region and the province of Cavite, and a resident of Kaunlaran Horseshoe Drive, Molino II, Bacoor City.
A report submitted to Cavite Provincial Director Police Col. Eleuterio M. Ricardo Jr. indicated that operatives of QCPD Special Operation Unit (DSOU), Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU), Cavite Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU), Las Piñas City Police Station (CPS) and Bacoor City Police Station (BCPS) conducted a surveillance operation against the suspect.
Officers later saw Puerto riding a motorcycle in front of Nazareth Compound in Bgy. Molino 3, Bacoor City, Cavite at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
Sensing the police officers tailing him, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the lawmen, triggering a shootout.
Puerto died on the spot.
Police said the Bayawak Gun-for-Hire group was involved in a series of robbery hold-ups targeting convenience stores in the National Capital Region and Region 4A.
Recovered at the crime scene were one cal. 45 pistol with one magazine, one extra magazine, six empty cartridges, and a Honda Click motorcycle.
