DONALD Trump on Monday was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.
The Republican leader took his oath of office at the US Capitol Rotunda as frigid weather forced the ceremony indoors.
Trump was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts as he begins his second term as president of the United States.
He returned to the White House four years after he left it in defeat.
In his coming back to the White House, he renewed his vow to put America first and tariff foreign countries to enrich Americans.
Trump underscored his America First credo as his second four-year term is expected to see a major shift in the U.S. approach to alliances, trade and other key issues.
“The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world,” Trump said in his speech.
“We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer,” he added.
Trump said he will put America first every single day of his administration.
Vowing to build the “strongest military the world has ever seen,” he hinted at his desire to end wars abroad and refrain from getting involved in foreign conflict.
Trump also made repeated references to expanding US territory abroad.
In Central America, he urged Panama to “return” the Panama Canal, claiming unfair trade practices across the US-built waterway.
“We gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back,” Trump said.
To the north, he encouraged Canada to become the US’s 51st state.
Trump also called for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the “Gulf of America.”
He likewise said he would revert the name of an Alaskan mountain, currently known by its Indigenous name Denali, to “Mount McKinley.”
In his speech, Trump depicted the US’s colonial era as a time of triumph, arguing that present-day Americans need to return to the spirit of that age.
“The spirit of the frontier is written into our hearts. The call of the next great adventure resounds from within our souls,” Trump said.
During his speech, Trump vowed to immediately begin an overhaul of America’s trade system to protect American workers and families.
“Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” he said.
It can be recalled that during his election campaign, Trump proposed a 10 to 20 percent tariff on all imports and threatened to impose tariffs of up to 60 percent on Chinese goods.
“The United States will once again consider itself a growing nation, one that increase our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations and carries our flags into new and beautiful horizons,” he said.
“And we will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars,” Trump said.
He unveiled his plan to sign a series of executive orders on the first day in office, including declaring a national emergency at the U.S.’ southern border, sending troops to the border to stop the entry of illegal immigrants and designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations
“With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense,” he said.
This was Trump’s second presidency, after serving in the White House from 2017 to 2021.
