TRANSPORTATION Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered the immediate suspension and review of an old policy limiting hand-carried luggage on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3),.
The order came following concerns that it may add unnecessary burdens on commuters.
Dizon directed MRT-3 general manager Michael Capati to immediately suspend the policy while it undergoes a full review, adding that regulations should be more commuter-friendly.
The Transportation chief was recently informed about the rule which restricts the size and quantity of hand-carried luggage allowed inside MRT-3 trains.
“The primary goal of our public transport systems is to provide safe, convenient, and efficient service to our commuters. If a policy is found to be outdated and imposes undue hardship, we must reassess and ensure it aligns with the needs of the public,” Dizon, in a statement, said.
The directive comes amid mounting complaints from passengers who rely on the MRT-3 for daily transportation.
Commuters have raised concerns that the restrictions on luggage size limit their ability to carry essential items, particularly for workers and small business owners who depend on the railway system for their livelihoods.
Dizon emphasized that the policy review must be conducted with urgency to avoid further inconvenience.
The DOTr has tasked the MRT-3 management to conduct consultations with stakeholders, including commuters and security personnel, to determine the best approach moving forward.
The department assured the public that any revisions to the policy will be made with their best interests in mind.
The MRT-3 prohibits passengers from bringing dangerous items such as firearms, explosives, bladed weapons, flammable substances, illegal drugs, and foul-smelling food.
Bulky luggage exceeding 2ft. x 2ft., elongated items over 5ft., and unpackaged or gift-wrapped items not opened for inspection are also not allowed.
Foldable bikes with wheels over 20″ and uncaged pets are also prohibited.
