THE Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that classes in public schools nationwide for school year 2025-2026 will start on June 16, 2025.
The shift marks a return to the pre-pandemic school calendar as stated in DepEd Order 12, Series of 2025 signed by Education Secretary Sonny Angara.
The school year will run until March 31, 2026, covering 197 class days, including the End-of-School-Year (EOSY) rites.
According to DepEd, the number may vary based on unforeseen events and future directives.
Enrollment and Brigada Eskwela are set from June 9 to 13 or one week before classes officially begin.
Private schools, Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs), and state and local universities and colleges (SUCs/LUCs) may adopt the multi-year guidelines for the academic calendar.
However, they must comply with Republic Act 7797, as amended by RA 11480, which mandates a school year duration of 200 to 220 class days.
Classes must start between the first Monday of June and the last day of August. Any deviations require prior notification to the respective regional offices.
The Alternative Learning System (ALS), catering to out-of-school youth and adults, will also commence on June 16.
The school year first shifted to October in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, classes have typically started between August and September and ended in the summer months of April to May, which has proved challenging given the extreme heat the country experiences in those months.
To avoid risks to learners and teachers due to extreme heat, the DepEd has previously allowed schools to shift to modular distance learning.
