SENATE President Francis “Chiz” Escudero condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir that left 26 tourists dead.
“We stand with the world in condemning in the strongest terms the recent terror attack on tourists in the resort town of Pahalgam in the Kashmir region and in demanding justice and accountability for this unconscionable assault on innocent civilians,” Escudero, in a statement, said.
The attack occurred on April 22 in the Baisaran area near Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination in the Jammu and Kashmir region of India.
The incident happened as hundreds of thousands of tourists were holidaying in the region.
Gunmen reportedly linked to The Resistance Front (TRF) opened fire on a group of Indian tourists.
Indian authorities believed the TRF operates as a proxy for a Pakistan-based militant organization.
Pakistan denied involvement in the terror attack.
A full investigation has been launched by the authorities as heightened security measures have been implemented in the area.
Escudero expressed condolences to the victims and solidarity with the affected communities.
“We join India and the Filipino-Indian community in commiserating with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this brutal attack as they mourn the lives of 26 people shot dead by terrorists,” he said.
“Our thoughts are with them and to those who survived this mass murder,” the Senate leader added.
Diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan reportedly increased following the attack.
Indian officials have publicly attributed responsibility to groups based in Pakistan.
Following the mass murder, India and Pakistan have enacted various measures, including the suspension of certain bilateral agreements and diplomatic actions.
International bodies and governments have reportedly urged the two countries to pursue de-escalation and allow legal processes to proceed without further conflict
Meanwhile, Escudero called for restraint while investigations are ongoing.
“As investigation is underway, let calm and peace prevail to de-escalate the tension in that region and allow the wheels of justice run their course,” the Senate leader said.
