FIVE grade schoolers on Thursday drowned in a stagnant water pond in Bgy. Panoroganan in Marawi City .
Two of the victims were aged 11, one is 10 years old while the two others were 7 years old. Three of them were boys while the two others were girls.
They were declared dead on arrival by physicians at a hospital where a police team and employees of the Marawi City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office brought them for treatment.
An investigation showed the five were last seen on Thursday morning on their way to a large water pond, a catch basin of rainwaters, in a secluded area in Bgy. Panoroganan.
Villagers told probers that they noticed the victims swimming, along with another playmate, at a shallow part of the pond.
While swimming, the children saw a floating junk doorless refrigerator, which they boarded and paddled with their hands towards the deep portion of the pond.
The doorless refrigerator flipped and rolled over sending the victims to the water.
The victims tried to swim back towards the side of the pond but failed and they were all drowned.
