WEAR MASK AS MAYON UNREST CONTINUES, DOH TELLS RESIDENTS

THE Department of Health advised residents near restive Mayon Volcano to wear mask to protect themselves from the harmful effects of ashfall.

In a public advisory issued yesterday, the DOH said face masks must be worn to cover the nose and mouth as volcanic ash can affect the respiratory system, eyes and overall health.

The DOH also told residents to ensure the supply of medicine for those who have asthma and allergy.

Goggles may also be worn for eye protection.

The DOH advised the public to avoid using contact lenses and use eyeglasses instead if possible.

Based on the volcano bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued on Sept. 20, Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, signifying a “relatively high level of unrest.” Alert Level 3 indicates that an eruption within weeks or even days could still be possible.
