THE Department of Education (DepEd) strongly condemned the killing of a teacher and her husband in Banisilan, Cotabato on Thursday.
The Banisilan Municipal Police Station identified the victims as Angelie Fuertes Romaguero, a public school teacher, and her husband Juanito Fuertes Romaguero Jr..
The couple succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
“This act of violence is an attack not only on individuals but on the values of education, respect, and community,” Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, in a statement, said.
The Vice President extended her sincerest condolences to the family of the victims as she joined them in this time of grief.
She also called the law enforcement authorities to arrest and swiftly bring those responsible for the heinous act to justice.
The DepEd reaffirms its commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for teachers and learners alike, where learning can thrive free from violence, fear and intimidation.
The couple were traveling on a family-owned tricycle on their way to the Pantar Elementary School in Banisilan town when men on motorcycles overtook and blocked their route then shot the victims repeatedly on Thursday morning.
The gunmen fled after the killing.
The husband died on the spot while the teacher succumbed to bullet wounds while being treated at a hospital.
An investigation is ongoing.
