A SPORTS utility vehicle bearing a license plate no. 7 on Sunday night entered the EDSA bus lane and attempted to run over a female traffic enforcer before fleeing.
Number 7 vehicle registration plates are assigned to senators.
The vehicle was caught illegaly passing Guadalupe Station’s northbound EDSA lane at 6:28 p.m. on Sunday.
A female traffic enforcer approached the vehicle to verify the driver’s identity and tell the violation.
However, instead of cooperating, the driver attempted to run over the enforcer and fled.
Before fleeing, the passenger of the SUV flashed a middle finger dirty sign to the enforcer.
The incident was captured on a video taken by one of the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation of the Department of Transportation (DOTr-SAICT) personnel and was later uploaded on their Facebook account and went viral.
Jonathan Gesmundo, executive assistant to the DOTr Secretary, condemned the behavior of the driver and one of its occupants.
“We condemn the actions of the driver and the passenger in this incident. Our officers were simply doing their jobs to maintain order and ensure the smooth flow of traffic,” Gesmundo said.
“We will work closely with the authorities to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible and hold them accountable for their actions,” he added.
Meanwhle, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said the Senate protocol plate in the viral video is fake.
Earlier Senate President Francis Escudero urged the owner of the SUV bearing license plate no. 7 who reportedly tried to run over a female traffic enforcer after being caught driving inside the bus lane to surface and take responsibility.
“The LTO has proven that the plate used by the SUV in the video is fake. This issue should not end here. The LTO should identify the owner of the vehicle and make him pay for violating the law,” the Senate head said.
