A POLICE officer responding to a robbery-holdup on Monday was killed in a shootout that also left the suspect dead in Quezon City.
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is mourning the death of Patrolman Curtney Harwin Baggay who died in the line of duty.
“The NCRPO deeply mourns the untimely demise of Patrolman Curtney Harwin Baggay, who gave his life in line of duty while responding to an armed robbery incident in Quezon City. Pat Baggay is a hero to all of us, a very brave and committed cop,” NCRPO Regional Director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin said.
“His sacrifice must compel us to serve with greater vigilance, dedication, and purpose. We offer our deepest respect and condolences to the family of Patrolman Baggay,” he added.
Aberin said the NCRPO will extend all the necessary assistance to the bereaved family in full recognition of his duty and sacrifice.
An investigation showed the robbery-holdup occurred at 2:30 a.m. Monday near the corner of Katuparan and Katipunan Streets in Bgy. Commonwealth, Quezon City.
The suspect robbed and shot vendor Fernando, 59. A stray bullet hit bystander Irah, 23.
The duo were brought to the hospital for treatment.
The gunshot alerted Pat. Baggay and a fellow officer, who were then stationed at the nearby Benigno Aquino Elementary School.
The two officers immediately responded.
Witnesses said the suspect shot Baggay, who was hit in the left arm that pierced his chest. Even wounded, he was able to retaliate with a gunshot while his buddy finished the suspect.
Baggay was rushed to Rosario Maclang Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
