AN old Buri palm tree on Sunday fell into a nipa hut killing five out of six sleeping occupants in Bgy. Cawayanin, Pitogo, Quezon.
Town police chief Maj. Bashmeer Hamin identified the victims as Alberto Bueno, 66, her daughter Jean Andrea Bueno Pena, 35, the latter’s husband Alvin Del Pena, 35, and the couple’s children Nazareth Eussef, 11, and Noeh Isaiah, 5 month old.
The couple’s eldest son, 18, who sustained minor injury in the leg luckily survived in the incident, Hamin said.
“Mabuti na lamang po at nagbago ako ng posisyon sa paghiga dahil nilamig ako,” the boy told probers.
Officer on case PSSG Bryan Seredio said the tragedy occurred around 5 a.m. at the height of strong winds brought by typhoon “Ramil.”
The official said an old Buri palm (Buli) tree suddenly fell exactly into the nipa hut killing the victims instantly.
“Maliban po sa malakas na hangin ang tumama, marupok na talaga ‘yung puno ng buli dahil sinunog ‘yon ng mga taga roon para mabuwal na,” said Seredio.
Shortly after the incident, the survivor sought help from the police who immediately responded, along with personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Mangement Office (MDRRMO).
