CAVITE Governor Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla Jr. on Tuesday said fishermen in Cavite affected by the oil spill from the sunken MT Terranova will be compensated.
The governor issued the statement following a meeting with lawyers and representatives of MT Terranova, the oil tanker that sank off Bataan and caused a massive oil spill to the coastal areas of Cavite.
An Inter-Agency Meeting was held at the Department of Justice (DOJ) in Taft Avenue, Manila on Monday regarding the creation of a fact-finding committee that will investigate the possible criminal liability of MT Terranova.
Also present during the meeting were representatives from the International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund (IOPC) and insurance companies.
Remulla said that it was agreed upon that MT Terranova will compensate the 31,000 fisherfolks in Cavite affected by the oil spill.
The governor said that based on the computation, the company of the sunken oil tanker should pay the Cavite fishermen P9 million to P12 million per day.
The figure was computed from the day a state of calamity was declared in the province until the days the affected fishermen were unable to return to their normal lives.
