THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is conducting an investigation into reports that some local officials travelled abroad despite a ban on foreign trips amid Typhoons Tino and Uwan devastation.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said around 20 local officials were out of the country despite the cancellation of leaves.
Remulla earlier ordered the suspension of all official and unofficial foreign travel of elected and appointed local officials from November 9 to 15 as the country continues to deal with the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino and braces for another incoming storm, Typhoon Uwan.
The memorandum instructs all local government officials, including governors, mayors, and other employees, to remain in their areas of responsibility to oversee disaster coordination, preparedness, and response efforts.
Previously issued Foreign Travel Authorities (FTAs) covering the suspension period are revoked, and those currently abroad are ordered to return immediately to their respective localities.
The order came as several Cebu mayors and a provincial board member faced criticism for being abroad while Typhoon Tino is battering the province.
